Katie & Bruno’s Fundraiser for SupportED

Katie and her faithful dog Bruno, will be walking 150KM to raise funds for SupportED Scotland.

We’re so proud of Katie & the journey she’s been on with her recovery. This February as part of Eating Disorder Awareness Month, she and her faithful dog Bruno, will be walking 150KM to raise funds for SupportED Scotland. This is her story.

Eating disorders are serious, complex mental illnesses affecting over 1.25 million people in the UK and have the highest mortality rate of any mental health condition. Despite this, they remain under-researched and under-funded. Since COVID-19, cases in Scotland have risen sharply, with hospital admissions for eating disorders increasing by 86% between 2019 and 2021 alone.

February is Eating Disorder Awareness Month, and this year it means something very personal to me. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I developed anorexia nervosa. Alongside NHS treatment, SupportED Scotland played a vital role in my recovery, helping me understand my illness, reminding me I wasn’t alone, and giving me the tools to take back control. Recovery hasn’t been easy or linear, but with support, I was officially discharged from treatment in October 2024.

To give back, I’m walking 150km throughout February with my dog, Bruno, to raise funds for SupportED Scotland. Bruno has been with me through my lowest points and my strongest moments. from declining health to climbing munros and finding joy again. He gave me a reason to keep going when things felt impossible.

I’m doing this challenge to support a charity that saves lives across Scotland and to prove that we’re far more capable than our minds tell us. Any donation, big or small, would mean the world to me and will help SupportED continue their incredible work.

Update – 3rd February 2026

Thank you to the wonderful Alyxs for the lovely sweatshirt, t-shirt and tote bag. Our just giving page is live and has already overtaken our target £500 which is madness!! (we’re now fast approaching £700!!)

Just had a lovely 10km walk & I’m concerned at the amount of dog shampoo I’ll go through in February 😂

Here’s another super cute photo of Bruno :)

Update – 4th February 2026

New waterproof trousers bought as during the walk this morning, I realised my old ones aren’t waterproof anymore!

28km into the challenge and I’m blown away by all the donations and support from friends and people I’ve never met before so thank you!

Nearly at £800! 🤩🤩

Update – 12th February 2026

We’re now at 40km, and fundraising has reached an incredible £995. Honestly, every time I log into the JustGiving page I’m blown away by the generosity, encouragement, and kind words from everyone following along on this journey. The support really does mean more than I can put into words.

I had a lovely walk on Saturday with my partner and Bruno, which felt like a real highlight of the week. Physically, I’m still finding the challenge really enjoyable and haven’t felt the effects too much yet, although Bruno might say otherwise! His naps have definitely increased this week, and there have been far fewer of his usual crazy nighttime spells.

Thanks again for all the support, it truly keeps me going!

Update – 17th February

On Saturday we completed a long 9km walk, bringing our total to 90km, well past the halfway mark of the 150km challenge. We’re firmly on track now, and I’m blown away that we’ve not only reached our £500 fundraising target but doubled it, hitting £1,000.

This weekend felt especially significant for me on a personal level. It really hit me just how far I’ve come in my recovery journey. With it being Valentine’s weekend, my partner and I went out for a lovely meal, and for the first time in a long time, I didn’t second guess my choices. I wasn’t overwhelmed by anxious thoughts, I simply chose what I felt like eating and enjoyed the moment for what it was. That might sound small to some, but for me, it felt huge. Food freedom does exist and for anyone worrying it’ll never come back , this is a message to say it will just be kind to yourself.

I’ve also been making a conscious effort to properly fuel myself for these walks, and reaching this milestone has brought a powerful realisation: food truly is fuel. It supports me, strengthens me, and allows me to keep showing up, not just for the challenge, but for myself.

This weekend wasn’t just about the kilometres. It was about growth, gratitude, and recognising progress!

There’s not many photo updates apart from a sleepy Bruno because we had a lazy movie day on Sunday :)

UPDATE – 24th February

We’re heading into the final and most meaningful week of this challenge. With it being Eating Disorder Awareness Week, it feels especially significant. Seeing social media filled with people and organisations sharing support and resources has been inspiring. It’s a reminder that no one has to struggle alone, and that compassion and understanding truly matter.

This past weekend Bruno and I were surrounded by friends who have supported us every step of the way (quite literally). We started by winning our regular pub quiz, which gave us a great boost, then headed out for a woodland walk with a friend. Even when the rain poured down, we kept laughing and spotting a rainbow afterwards felt like a gentle reminder that brighter moments follow hard ones.

Our trip to Loch Leven to meet another friend was equally memorable. Bruno squealed with excitement the entire drive! We arrived with slightly sore heads but the fresh air and hint of spring made everything better .

As we head into this final week, we’ve completed 115km and have two big walks planned. We’re both starting to feel tired, but proud and more motivated than ever to reach 150km.

Looking forward to seeing Alyxs on Wednesday for a Perthshire walk, and hope the nice weather stays! We end the week climbing Goatfell on the Isle of Arran.

UPDATE – 5th March

Well that’s Bruno and I completed the fundraiser and we’re incredibly blown away by the support , donations still coming in and we’re sitting at £1,285. Bruno went on his holidays on Saturday so my partner and I could climb goatfell. All the way to the top and we couldn’t have picked a better day for it. The views were amazing !! Here’s my roundup and thank you to everyone who donated and the charity for motivating me to keep going and making this possible.

We’ve come to the end of my fundraiser for SupportED, and to say I’m shocked is an understatement. We set a target of £500…and somehow reached an incredible £1,285.

I started this challenge at a pivotal point in my recovery. I felt ready to close a chapter on one of the hardest parts of my life, to stop hiding in the shadows of an illness that once consumed me, and take back control one final time. This was about proving to myself, and to anyone else struggling, that recovery is possible and life truly does get better.

A week before starting, I almost didn’t do it. Sharing something I’d kept hidden for so long felt overwhelming and too vulnerable. But with the support of my partner, I remembered why I began, because this isn’t something that should live in silence. If I had given in to fear, SupportED would be £1,285 down, and that’s £1,285 that will now help provide hope to people who need it.

Reaching the summit of Goatfell felt euphoric, a cold can of cider in hand, celebrating not just the climb and fundraiser , but moving forward from a chapter that no longer defines me.

Thank you to everyone who donated, shared posts, walked beside us, and opened conversations. Your support means more than I can say.

Signing off, a very proud (and very tired) duo,

Katie & Bruno ❤️
